Does Your Self-Esteem Need a Boost?

We’re already a month into 2021, and aside from other things, February is also International Boost Self-Esteem Month.  Self-esteem is defined as, “confidence in one’s own worth or abilities.”

Here’s the big question – does your self-esteem or self-confidence need boosting?

You may have someone in your life tell you all the time you can do it, or that you’re beautiful, or you deserve the promotion, or whatever they are encouraging you about. The fact is that if you don’t believe it, it doesn’t matter if a million people all tell you the same thing.

Just about every person is insecure about certain parts of their life or their personality or their body or something. A few of us are insecure about every part of our life.

But why? Typically it’s because we see others who are better at something than we are, or are more popular, or have better teeth, or…and the list goes on and on. Then that little inner voice keeps telling us that we’re just not good enough, and that permeates throughout our lives.

Or maybe it was another person telling you that you weren’t good enough or thin enough or smart enough or whatever enough. And that voice continues to play over and over in your head.

Don’t worry about what people think about you, because here’s the fact – they’re probably not thinking about you at all! Most people are too busy thinking about themselves to be bothered with thinking about you.

So if that’s true, give it a shot. Go for the promotion. Ask the guy out. Buy that cute outfit you have been wanting. Start the new business.

Okay – easier said than done. We get it. Probably not so simple as flipping a switch. It’s going to take some self-confidence.

So to give your self-esteem a much-needed boost, you need to change the voice in your head and the messages it’s saying – especially if it’s your voice!

To help you do that, try this proven method that really works – affirmations. Affirmations are statements telling yourself something positive in your life. They “affirm” what you really want. You may think they’re silly just saying these types of things to yourself. But right now – and possibly for many years – you have been saying the negative things about yourself.

You need to understand that these negative statements are lies. It’s time to start telling yourself the truth through affirmations.

Let’s give an example that might seem a little extreme. Maybe you’ve always wanted to try stand-up comedy but were afraid that you weren’t good enough. People have told you for years how funny you are, but you’re afraid once you get up on stage you’ll bomb. What about this – what if you don’t? You’re never going to know until you try!

It definitely takes a level of confidence or self-esteem to get on that stage to begin with. That’s where the affirmations come in. Writing down statements like, “I am funny!”, “People love my jokes!” and “The audience gives me standing ovations when I perform!” and then reading them to yourself every day – maybe in front of the mirror – will help you get the confidence you need! And practice helps, too.

Of course, stand-up comedy is just one example. What is it for you? Maybe it’s calling that person you’re interested in. Maybe it’s asking your boss for a raise. Maybe it’s getting out of a bad relationship.

Whatever it is, try writing down as many affirmations as you can think of, and start saying them to yourself at the beginning and end of each day. It may seem strange at first, but keep going. We know that over time you will grow in positivity and self-confidence!
