How can You help best with World Health Day?

Happy World Health Day!  Each year on April 7th we celebrate the health of the world.

That encompasses a lot of things as you can imagine – healthy air, healthy water, healthy environment, and for the past year we have been focused on regaining our health as a global population by fighting the Covid-19 virus.

Perhaps there is one of these areas that is more important to you, or you are more passionate about, than others. No matter what it is, the fact remains that we need to make sure we take care of ourselves before we should focus on taking care of something else.

Here’s an example that helps explain why we need to take care of ourselves first. Have you ever taken a flight somewhere? Before the plane takes off, the flight crew goes through a safety demonstration on what to do if things start to go wrong. One of the things they explain is that if the air pressure suddenly goes down, oxygen masks will drop from the ceiling. You are then instructed to put your own oxygen mask on before helping anyone else around you who may need help with theirs – like children or older adults.

I remember thinking, “That’s not very nice. I want to help them first. They need my help!”

While it’s true they do need your help, you will not be of much help if you pass out while trying to get their oxygen mask on them.

By taking care of yourself first, you put yourself in a better position to help others. The same is true in life. You can’t donate to a worthy cause if your finances aren’t in order. You may not be able to participate in a local park clean-up event if you are suffering from depression and can’t get yourself off the couch.

And you can’t help fix the world until you first fix yourself. So if you’re struggling in any area of your life – mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, relationships, etc. – figure out what it is and start working on improving yourself. The world needs you!
