Happy Random Acts of Kindness Week! This week started off appropriately enough on Valentine’s Day and goes through Saturday, February 20.
So why is this a week worth celebrating? And what are random acts of kindness anyway?
Well…random means unplanned. And acts of kindness are little things that one person can do for another. It’s those little moments that just happen when we can make a difference for someone else, help them out of a quick jam, or maybe just put a smile on their face. You have heard or been involved with many of these acts over the years like…
Holding open a door for someone else.
Paying for the order of the person behind you at the coffee shop drive-thru.
Giving a call to someone you haven’t talked to in a while.
Helping someone carry a box or groceries when they were struggling.
Baking cookies for someone you know who might need some cheering up.
Can be something so small yet make a big impact. It could be something that takes a little planning (like baking cookies) but the best moments are ones that just happen. Just go about your day, and be extra aware of what is happening around you.
If you heighten your awareness every day, it will become a habit. Doing these random acts will become part of who you are. And what the world needs is more people doing little things that make a difference to just one person and expecting nothing in return.
Don’t put pressure on or force yourself to have to do something or you may end up stressed out. This is something that should bring you more enjoyment in life and the intangible rewards that come from giving.
Maybe you’re a planner, and if so it can be a little uncomfortable doing something spontaneously. There may be friends or family members you haven’t talked to in a while. Put on your calendar for a time each day that’s convenient to give them a call, send them a text or even a card in the mail.
Here’s the best part. When you do something nice for someone else that they weren’t expecting, and that you didn’t have to do, they are now more open to doing that for someone else. Some people call this “paying it forward.” We like thinking of it as being the first domino.
Have you ever seen one of those huge domino displays where someone sets up thousands of dominos in a pattern? Then they push the first domino which sets off a chain reaction of amazing activity, often creating beautiful patterns.
It all starts with the first domino. Without the first domino, nothing happens. But the first domino can’t just act on its own - it has to get that little push! Think of the voice inside you that tells you to go do something as the push you need in your role as the First Domino.
And now the second domino is moving which will impact the third, and so on. One little act of kindness can impact a life or even change the world.
You always have the opportunity to be the first domino. Just be sure to accept the push.
